font-family: Calibri;\">very<\/span><\/strong> special Akita\u00a0\u2013 she was born totally deaf.\u00a0 Kiyo has worked hard and\u00a0learned many things.\u00a0 This summer, she achieved\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">both<\/span> the UPD-1000 and UTD-1000 titles!<\/p>\n<p>In August, <strong>Nancy Almann<\/strong> <em>(owner\/handler and DSA Member)<\/em> , wrote us the following email:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">\u201cWhen she was 4 weeks old, her breeder made the terrible decision to have her euthanized. \u00a0Kiyo (\u2018Tipsy\u2019) could barely stand, and was not eating (she couldn\u2019t stand or latch onto her mother\u2019s teat). \u00a0When she did stand and walk,\u00a0staggered around in wobbly circles. \u00a0Lynny thought she had such severe neurological issues that the kindest thing to do would be to have her euthanized.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">Lynn made that horrendous trip to the vet with Little Missy, weeping as she drove. \u00a0Her vet gave Kiyo a thorough neurological exam, and figured out that her problem was deafness, not neurology. \u00a0Lynn drove home in tears,\u00a0this time weeping with relief.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">That night, she dreamt Kiyo was my dog. \u00a0She called me about her, but at the time I had no place or time for a special needs dog. \u00a0One of my dogs had just been diagnosed with cancer, our male had dementia, and just a few months\u00a0prior to that, I\u2019d adopted a young, whip smart dog who had absolutely NO training. \u00a0Think \u2018huge behavior issues because of her intelligence &amp; lack of respect for humans.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">A month later, brilliant Zuki was dead \u2013 euthanized due to osteosarcoma. \u00a0I called Lynn about Tipsy \u2013 and on Christmas day, 2011, she joined our pack.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">The fact that Kiyo is hale &amp; hearty enough to log enough mileage to earn both 1000 mile titles is a small miracle to us. \u00a0Thanks to DSA for providing a way to memorialize this.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;
